The idea of divorce can feel empowering, and bewildering. Once you decide divorce is your next step, most people wonder "What should I do first?".
Taking action early in the process is important so you make smart choices during divorce, and have your factual financial information at your fingertips. All of these things will save you time and money and give you peace of mind during a challenging time.
Here are 5 steps you should take ASAP:
- Get copies off all of your essential life paperwork
If you're in a long term marriage (5 years +) its important to have all pertinent statements and documents.
- Open your own checking or savings account.
Start building your own credit and accounts. Even opening an account with $25.00 will help you start building your own nest egg. (Keep in mind all money during divorce is considered community property.)
- If you don't have one already, get a credit card in your own name.
- Start asking for family law attorney or mediator recommendations.
A lot of divorce professionals offer initial free consultations. (Make sure to ask before booking an appointment!)
- Make a list of questions to ask in advance.
